How to Play Dixit
The name of the game is simple: Guess the artwork, and win points. Kind of like Pictionary or Charades meets Balderdash. However, there’s a little more to it than that.
Here’s how to play Dixit in a nutshell:
- Each round, one player selects a card from their hand, and thinks up a sentence inspired by the card. This could be a phrase, a lyric from a movie (if playing Disney edition)or anything else that comes to mind. You can choose to make the clues extra easy or extra hard depending on who you’re playing with.
- The player then places the card face down.
- The other players all choose cards that they think match the sentence and place them face down. The cards are then shuffled and then revealed.
- Players secretly vote for the card that best matches the narrator’s story, and the player whose card is chosen, scores points.
- The game continues with everyone taking turns to tell a story and to guess until someone reaches the end.
A different game every time you play
As there are 84 hand-drawn cards in each game, every game will be different and will inspire varying stories every time you play.
The Original cards come with fantastical, dreamlike situations, meant to inspire storytelling.
Dixit – Disney Edition features, you guessed it, scenes from popular Disney and Pixar films, from the classics we grew up with to the more recent ones our kids are currently watching on repeat. There are scenes inspired by Wreck-It Ralph, Moana, The Lion King and so many more.

Dixit: A dream game in any setting
Dixit is not only great for family fun, but it’s also a good game to bring out at birthday parties, sleepovers or anytime you need to entertain a tribe of rowdy kids – and quiet them down!
Kids 7+ will be able to play independently, especially once they play once or twice and get the hang of it.
Older kids and teens will also enjoy this game as it lets them try to outsmart others and try to trick their parents. As they advance, you can also add some strategy into the game by trying to trick your opponents through your storytelling. Sneaky, sneaky.
Of course, it’s also ideal for family games nights at home or with friends. Kids will love it, but Dixit pairs well with wine, cheese and adult games night too.
Another great thing about the collection is that the games don’t take too long to play. Set up is a cinch and the average game takes around 30 minutes to play, which means you won’t get halfway through the game and give up because everyone is bored or arguing because the Banker (aka your teen son) is clearly stealing money on the side.
Educational Value in a Fun Format
Fun is the name of the game but Dixit is also a great educational helper to teach little ones to express themselves, use their imaginations and exercise critical thinking, all the while having fun with their family.
I’ve also seen Dixit being played in my children’s school. What a smart way to get kids communicating and socialising!

A hard question indeed. Dixit- Disney Edition is our top pick for Disney/Pixar fans and was a firm fave among our team of reviewers last year.
However, the Original Dixit is better for creative thinkers and allows you to venture outside the Disneyverse, inspiring more creative (and hilarious) stories.
